A charity cornhole tournament with strong ties to the state’s commercial real estate industry is marking its return, seeking to raise more than $100,000 for two organizations.
Slated for May 4, starting at 3:30 p.m., the 2023 Cornhole for a Cause figures to draw a large crowd to Tranquillity Farm at 300 Old Chester Road in Chester for a friendly competition, live music, food and drinks as organizers seek to broaden the event’s impact. The tournament will raise funds for both The Hoving Home, an organization dedicated to helping women suffering from addiction rebuild their lives, and Team Legrand, which supports quality of life initiatives for those living with spinal cord injuries.
The event has raised more than $280,000 for various local charities since its inception, following an initial conversation between neighbors and industry contacts Dave Wisotsky and Chris Johnson.
“A lot of people appreciated that this is different,” said Wisotsky, Bohler’s director of operations. “It’s so refreshing to go to a business event that’s unique and fun. It makes for a great evening.”
The organizers noted that the tournament originated in 2015 as a friendly cornhole competition between two firms, which routinely held internal tournaments, before growing into a sponsored program that brings together professionals from across New Jersey’s architecture, engineering and construction industry. It grew as both Johnson and Wisotsky leveraged their connections to bring vendors together.
More than 100 people attended the first event, which raised $30,000.
“We knew a band who could play, I knew a caterer and I knew about Tranquility Farms — the venue — because our local Youth Football League had used it,” said Johnson, CEO of Enterprise Construction & Development.
Now spearheaded by Bohler’s Brianna Edwards, the event has grown each year to include raffles, auctions and a “longest throw” competition that expanded fundraising efforts, according to a news release. Last year’s tournament brought together more than 200 local professionals and raised nearly $80,000.
“We usually pick a charity aligned with a cause that has impacted our staff or their families in some way,” said Edwards, a senior proposal manager with Bohler. “It’s always really meaningful to be able to give back like this.”
