The LSRPA awarded eight Elmeryl Davies Memorial Scholarships to students who intend to pursue careers in environmental consulting in New Jersey or whose research will benefit the practice.
The students include three undergraduates, two masters degree candidates, and three doctoral candidates. Full-time students receive a $3,000 scholarship.
Jacqueline Park is a junior at Kean University majoring in Earth Science. A recipient of the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award, Park is the director of Urban Agriculture at Groundwork Elizabeth and co-chair of the Land Committee for the NJDEP’s Environmental Justice Advisory Council. In both her personal and academic life, Park is pursuing incorporating brownfields into the urban food system landscape.
Luce Paul is a senior at Rutgers University – New Brunswick, double majoring in Bioenvironmental Engineering and Environmental Science. Paul credits her desire to become an environmental engineer to the experiences she had growing up in Haiti. Following the completion of her bachelor’s degree, Paul hopes to enter the site remediation field and pursue an advanced degree.
Sebastian Plasencia is a senior at Rutgers University – Newark, majoring in Environmental Science. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Plasencia has spent time as a patient sitter at St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic. A member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Plasencia hopes to enter the workforce following graduation and make a positive impact on his community.
Brenna Ilg has been awarded the LSRPA scholarship for a second time. As a graduate student at Rutgers University – New Brunswick studying Environmental Science, Ilg’s research is focused on the effect of climate change on constructed wetlands. In addition to her studies, Ilg works as an environmental scientist performing sampling and due diligence for Paul Sakson Environmental.
Nicolette Filippone is pursuing her Ph.D. at Rutgers University – Newark in Environmental Science. Filippone’s research focuses on the utilization of preliminary geophysical data in order to understand the potential for natural attenuation of hydrocarbon contamination at sites. This research could provide environmental professionals with more effective and efficient site remediation processes.
Sameer Neve has been awarded the LSRPA scholarship for a second time. He is a doctoral candidate at the Stevens Institute of Technology whose research in Environmental Engineering focuses on the use of biomass, specifically vetiver grass, to remediate metals at brownfield sites.
Nuray Oncul is a graduate student at Rutgers University – Newark, studying Environmental Geology. A native of Turkey, Oncul’s research focuses on the understanding of how induced polarization can affect different metallic minerals and affect the fate and transport of chemicals in different soil types. With a greater understanding of this topic, Oncul hopes to apply it to the site remediation industry.
Oren Rabinovich is a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University – Newark, whose research focuses on the behavior of radon gas under changes in soil moisture and meteorological conditions. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Rabinovich is working towards helping site remediation professionals better understand the sources of pollution in soil and air.
